The final countdown
Today i made it through two and a half litres of sugar free coke.... it may have no sugar, but that can't be good for you. Final bed time - 5am. I could have gone to bed at my normal midnight-ish but I hate leaving a problem unsolved and one of my powers wasn't working right.... in the end I did the sensible thing and scrapped/rebuilt it entirely but without the physics :D
How do I feel about the final product ? It's pretty decent for a game built in a week. Are there things i'd change ? absolutely, are there things i cringe at when i test it ? not as many as I'd expect :D The only thing I wanted to do that I didn't end up doing was improving the combat system (for example there's no player health system so you cant fail) but I decided a couple of days ago that improving that aspect would take too much time, and I think I made the right call. The game is fun enough and you can complete the story, that's what matters. I feel like the polish I added in that time (UI, audio, etc) was more important than having better fighting.
I think my progress over the course of the jam was pretty solid. I had a plan and for the most part I stuck to it. I underestimated how long the character would take to make, and the combo system took far too long to build. In hindsight I should have realised the combo system was just a 'cool thing' I didnt really need and spent more time on the rest of the combat/health system and on the valkyrie powers especially.
Things for the future if I work on the project more:
- - health system
- - more interesting combat
- - combat AIs that concentrate on the player
- - vastly improved valkyrie powers
- - more audio (seriously, the one thing I am embarrassed about is the lack of certain audio queues that should exist)
Overall I had fun doing this jam, and I only pulled one late night so my scheduling was on point. The theme was a bit of a curveball (see devlog 1) but I think I overcame it in a decent way. The game I made was the game I had in mind from the beginning and I learned a few things along the way, which in my mind is the reason to do game jams. Overall 8/10, excellent work, room for improvement.
